Belva, WV – Marie Thornton Hughes “Pommy”, 86, of Belva passed away on Monday, February 3, 2014 in the comfort of her home.
She was a school teacher at the Dixie Grade School, member of Dixie First Baptist Church for over three decades, where she was the President of the Ladies Missionary Circle and the Adult Sunday School Teacher for 26 years. She was also a member of the CEOS and Ladies’ Auxiliary, VFW.
Born December 22, 1927 in Mt. Nebo, she was the daughter of Grover and Nancy Dorsey Thornton.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Grandle E. Hughes and a brother, Ira Thornton.
Left to cherish her memory are three daughters; Nancy Thompson of South Charleston, Mary Wills (Cliff) of Falls View, Jeannie Nichols (Danny) of Oak Hill; grandchildren, Scott Milam of Belva, Melody Cook (Stephen) of Eleanor, Kelli Williamson (Nick) of Charleston, Megan Rose (Josh) of Sissonville, Michael Tucker (Carrie) of Scarbro, Jonathon Tucker (Amber) of Killeen, TX, and Melanie (Lucas) Holcomb of Pittsburgh, PA ; great-grandchildren, Ashleigh (Tyler) Herdman of Winfield, Logan Cook, Dawson Cook and Jackson Cook of Eleanor, Ethan Roberts and Mia Williamson of Charleston, Julian Parker, Landon Parker and Annaleigh Rose of Sissonville, Jennifer and Michael Massey of Scarbro, and William Tucker of Killeen, TX; two great-great-granddaughters, Haidyn Annmarie Herdman of Winfield and Kyra Holcomb of Pittsburgh, PA; two sisters-in-law Norma Jean Dooley of Pocatalico and Alta Chaffin of Poquosoni, VA; and a special niece, Brenda Sue Jones of Beckley.
Services took place at 1 pm on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at the Dixie First Baptist Church with the Reverend Jeff Sevy and the Reverend Gary Owens officiating. Burial followed in the Hickory Grove Cemetery, Mt. Nebo.
