James G. Dawson, 89 of Duck, WV, entered into Heaven on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.

Born in Widen, WV, he was the son of Custer Dawson and Sylvia and Dorsel Grogg.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Gary Dawson and his son-in-law, Rick Willis.

He is survived by his wife, Joan Truman Dawson, daughter Cindy Willis, son Joe Dawson and wife April, grandchildren Joe Dawson, Mike Willis, Clare Dawson, and Holt Dawson, all of Duck.

Jim graduated from Widen High School, WVIT, and WVU.  He served his country as a U.S. Marine.  He was a coal miner, DOH worker, and a supervisor at Kraft Foods.  He was a teacher and principal for Clay County Schools before becoming the Clay County Superintendent for 21 years.  He also served as the RESA III Director and a WV State Senator.  One great honor was the James G. Dawson Hall of Fame where students are acknowledged for their academic successes!

He was a member of Fairview Baptist Temple where he taught Sunday School for many years.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday, June 4 at Wilson Smith Funeral Home at 11 a.m. with Minister Joe Dawson officiating.  Burial will be at the Dawson Farm, Duck, WV.

Friends may visit with the family 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a donation to the church of your choice.
