Dexter Dawson

Ovapa, WV- Dexter M. Dawson, 80, of Ovapa, entered into rest Friday, Dec. 20, 2013, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Born May 8, 1933, he was the oldest son of Hubert and Flora (Butcher) Dawson.

Dexter is survived by his loving wife of 54 years and 11 months, D. Karen Dawson; children, Kim and (Russ) Harper and Victor and (Penny) Dawson; grandchildren, Jessica (Kevin) Boyce, Amy (Jon) Pinson, Tyler Dawson (Suzanne Snyder), Jeffery (Jessie) Sams and Jared Sams (Chelsea Blankenship); great-grandchildren, Levi, Luke, Lane and Liam (expected arrival January 2014), Boyce, Avery Pinson, Jeffery III and Dawson Sams; brothers, Dudley, Dane and Daniel Dawson; and sister, Claudia O’Dell.  Dexter was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Cledith Atwood, Carmin Samples, and Chessie McCune.

Dexter was a member of Clendenin Advent Christian Church, a graduate of Clay County High School and retired from Columbia Gas. He enjoyed reading, following the Mountaineers, the Herd and, most of all, spending time with his family.

At Dexter’s request, in lieu of flowers, please send donations to Clendenin A.C. Church, P.O. Box 482, Clendenin, WV 25045, for the church family he loved so dearly.

Special thanks and appreciation to Hospice and Big Otter Clinic. It was Dexter’s wish to donate his body to Human Gift Registry so he could continue giving in death as he did in life, hoping to find a cure for cancer.

A celebration of life service was held at Clendenin Advent Christian Church on Sunday, Dec. 29, at 11 a.m. Following the service there was a lunch served in the fellowship hall.

Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.carlwilsonfuneralhome.com.

Wilson-Shamblin-Smith Funeral Home is honored to be serving the Dawson family.
