The Golden Horseshoe knighting ceremony was held at the West Virginia State Capitol. This ceremony has been a staple for West Virginia since 1931, and it is also the longest running state history competition in the United States. The test is a tough one, consisting of 50 questions testing the knowledge of our great state of West Virginia as well as its culture. The three highest scoring students in each county are honored in an annual knighting ceremony at the Cultural Center. The top three students earning this honor from Clay County were Heather Sears, James Summers III, and Olivia Legg. Each scored exceptionally well on the test and also had to write an essay on a particular subject pertaining to West Virginia history. They had the opportunity to meet and greet other students participating in the event, had the chance to tour the Capitol, meet dignitaries and enjoy a wonderful meal. Congratulations to each of these students for a job well done. We need to make sure that our state and its culture will be remembered for years to come.
