Saturday, January 25 was the last day to file to run for office in the 2014 Clay County election. With the exception of applications that may still be received in the mail, several candidates have filed to run. For the open position of Sheriff of Clay County, incumbent Garrett Samples, and locals Peter Triplett and David Holcomb have officially filed. Hiram Lewis applied to run for Sheriff but changed his political party past the allowable deadline and was denied the opportunity to be listed on the ballot.
For the open County Commission seat, current member Mike Pierson is running for re-election and will be challenged by Greg Fitzwater.
Board of Education candidates include three incumbents and several newcomers. Persons filing for the three open positions include Morgan Triplett, Dave Mullins, Beth Cercone, Jim Ryan, Cheryl White, Jason Triplett and Susan Bodkins. In a situation similar to the Sheriff’s race, local business owner Keith Wray filed for the BOE position but will be unable to run due to inappropriately switching his political party also.
Rev. James Duffield and Karen Nicholas are in the running for County District A Executive Committee. Glen Sutton was the only application received for Conservation District Supervisor.
There is a possibility more applications will be received in the mail, we will keep you updated as the election approaches. Ballot position will be decided by random drawing at 9:00 am on February 18, 2014.
