The next West Virginia Statewide Independent Living Council (WVSILC) meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, December 7, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. in the conference room on the 3rd floor at the Division of Rehabilitation Services office at 10 McJunkin Road, Nitro. All materials distributed during council meetings and activities by staff, presenters, or participants must be provided in accessible formats. Contact the SILC office to identify required formats for SILC meetings. Formats for all other activities must include large print, computer diskette, audiocassette, and Braille. In order to ensure all meetings and activities are safe and generally considered non-hazardous to individuals with environmental illnesses, the SILC operates in a smoke-free environment and requests that all employees, council members, and members of the public refrain from wearing scented personal hygiene products such as perfumes, colognes, scented lotions, etc.
The Women, Infants and Children Nutrition Program (WIC) is a supplemental foods program for pregnant, postpartum or breastfeeding women, infants and children, under the age of five. A food handlers class will be held at Clay County Health Department on Wednesday December 14 at 2 p.m. Cost is $10 and is non-refundable unless CCHD cancels class. Make check or money order for $10 to Clay Co Health Dept, P.O. Box 36, Clay, WV 25043. Food cards are good for two years.
The Faith Missionary Baptist Church, Duck, invites everyone to our Christmas play on Saturday, December 10, at 7p.m. The play is titled “It Wasn’t the Hilton, You Know.” We hope that the play will cause you to reflect on the reason for the season – to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior. Clay Elementary School will host Bingo on Friday, Dec. 2 at 6 p.m. Doors open at 5 p.m. Cost is $20 for one card, $25 for two cards per person upon entry. Each Bingo Winner’s Choice of a basket or 31 product. Bring a donation of a roll of Christmas wrap and receive an extra card. Limit of three additional cards with Christmas wrap donations. Christmas wrap will be used at local outreach programs. There will also be door prizes, raffles, free dessert and concessions.
TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) meetings are held every Monday at Huffman Bookkeeping, Inc., 512 Elk Street, Gassaway, at 5:00 pm. The AARP Drivers Safety program has announced a refresher AARP Safe driving Class scheduled for Friday, Dec. 9, at the Braxton County Senior Center. The class will be from 12-4 p.m. The cost of the class is $15 for AARP members or $20 for non-members. Class members will receive a certificate to use as proof of completion of the class. Most auto insurance companies will allow a multi-year discount for drivers who have completed the class. Lunch is served at the Senior Center beginning at 11:30 a.m. Attendees are encouraged to come and enjoy lunch before the class.
