United Way of Central West Virginia is holding a grant-making information series to help various agencies determine if they qualify for funding. Clay County non-profit executive directors and their board members are invited to learn about how to qualify for funding. The Charleston coin club will hold their annual coin show to be held Saturday, November 5,and Sunday, November 6, at the Charleston Civic Center, in Charleston. The show will be held from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Sunday. There is no admission fee. Dealers from West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky will be in attendance to buy, sell, and trade coins and coal mine scrip. The Charleston coin club meets the third Tuesday of each month at the Kanawha City Community Center, 3511 Venable Avenue, Charleston. The meetings start at 7p.m. The public is invited to attend. Take Back Day in Clay County will be held Saturday, October 22, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Clay County Courthouse. Controlled, non-
controlled, and over the counter substances will be collected. This program is anonymous and all efforts will be made to protect the anonymity of individuals disposing of medications. No questions or requests for identification will be made. Participants may dispose of medication in its original container or by removing the medication from its container and disposing of it directly into the disposal box. If an original container is submitted, the individual is encouraged to remove any identifying information from the prescription label. All solid dosage pharmaceutical product and liquids in consumer containers will be accepted. Liquid products, such as cough syrup, should remain sealed in their original container. The depositor should ensure that the cap is tightly sealed to prevent leakage. Intra-venous solutions, injectibles, and syringes will not be accepted due to potential hazard posed by blood-borne pathogens. Illicit substances such as marijuana or methamphetamine are not a part of this initiative and should not be placed in collection containers.
An informational update on EQT’s proposed, 42” Mountain Valley Pipeline will be held on Thursday, October 20, at 6 p.m. in the West Virginia Building at Jackson’s Mill. Topics will include: loss of property values and future land use, effect on insurance and mortgages, the incineration zone, impact on water supplies, the necessity of two, 42 -inch pipelines, if any of this gas for West Virginia, how compressor stations may affect your health, alternatives, economic losses to counties, eminent domain abuse and what you can do. The Braxton County Soccer Club will hold their Annual Meeting on Sunday, December 4, at 3 p.m. at the Sutton Community Building (Date, Time and Location are subject to change). All members of the club are welcome and encouraged to attend. We will be voting on by-laws amendments, reviewing the financial status and audit report, as well as voting in the following officers: vice president, secretary and league rep for a two-year term and filling the empty positions of registrar and referee coordinator for the remaining year of the unexpired terms. Per the clubs by-laws anyone wishing to run for a position on the Board must announce their intentions in writing and send to the Secretary by no latter then November 4, 2016. This allows job descriptions and ballots to be printed and handed out. The Women, Infants and Children Nutrition Program (WIC) is a supplemental foods program for pregnant, postpartum or breastfeeding women, infants and children, under the age of 5. Clay County High School Career and Technical Center will be teaching a beginning welding class starting Sept 27 at 6 p.m. The class will meet Tuesday and Thursday evenings through Nov. 17. Students will receive instruction and hands on training in basic welding safety, oxy-acetylene, arc and mig welding. There may be a small fee to cover materials used during class.
