West Virginia University Extension in Clay County is now accepting applications through February 5th for the 2016 West Virginia Master Gardener Program. Weekly classes will be held each Monday from February 15th until April 18th from 6:00-9:00 pm at Big Otter Elementary off Interstate Exit 40. A minimum of 10 participants must register to hold the program. In exchange for 30 hours of indoor and outdoor instruction, candidates must agree to donate 40 hours of volunteer service to West Virginia University Extension. There is a program fee of $85 to cover the cost of the training manual and other materials. For an application, please contact the Clay County Extension Office at 304-587-4267. Elk Conservation District annual plant and tree sale, a service to the residents of Braxton, Clay, Nicholas and Webster counties. The offer includes the following items: Crimson Gold, Jonamac, Fuji, Yellow Transparent, GoldRush, and Gala Apple trees; Sandra Rose and Montmorency Cherry trees; Contender and John Boy Peach trees; Shenandoah and Potomac Pear trees; Arapaho Blackberry plants, Heritage(Red) and Jewell(Black) Raspberry plants, Surecrop Strawberry plants, and Blue Ray and Jersey Blueberry plants. Seedlings available are: American Chestnut, Allegheny Chinkapin, Redbud, White Pine, Scotch Pine and Norway Spruce.
The Clay County WIC Office located at 452 Main Street in Clay is open to serve the public every Monday, Wednesday and Friday 8 am – 4 pm. The office will be closed Monday, January 18 in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. The Women, Infants and Children Nutrition Program (WIC) is a supplemental foods program for pregnant, postpartum or breastfeeding women, infants and children, under the age of five.
