The CCMS boys’ baseball team was both on the road and at home this week squashing the competition.  The Mustangs have set the diamond on fire with some excellent technical/physical baseball and have racked up seven wins with no losses.  Simply put, this is one of the best teams to hit the field for the Mustangs in a while.  The talent on the team would lend itself to believe that this could be the year they bring home the gold, but there is a lot of baseball yet to play.

Over the past week, the Mustangs set their sights on the

Yellow Jackets of Spencer Middle.  It was a good game for the Mustangs as they met little resistance towards the win.  When the dust settled, it was the Mustangs over the Yellow Jackets 7-2.  Then Midland Trail blew into town on a perfect night for baseball.  Both teams looked as though talent wouldn’t be a problem and neither would be the action.

The Mustangs sent ace pitcher, and I do mean ace pitcher, Pierce Adkins to the mound to try and put down any offense Midland Trail might muster.  Pierce went to work with some English that didn’t come from a cracker box.  Those pitches kept the Trail players guessing and striking.  By the time he was done, he set down 15 batters while allowing just one hit and one run.  Trail didn’t score until the top of the seventh inning when they started off with a hit and looked like they were going to make a comeback.

The Mustangs got their runs early in the 3rd inning on some wild throws and heads up base running.  They piled the bases with runners and had their sights set on blowing up the score board, but Trail shut them down.  In the top of the 7th inning, Trail had one on base who eventually scored.  Pierce got busy and was setting batters down but walked a batter who decided to try and steal 2nd.  This was a mistake; the pitch came in perfect for the gun arm of catcher Joel Elliot to fire the perfect throw to 2nd and ended the chance for a Trail comeback.

It was a good game to watch, and now the season gets even a little tougher as the Mustangs travel to play the Blue Devils of George Washington on Tuesday. It should be a great game.  A win here would set in motion a momentum that any other team would have a hard time stopping.  If you want to see some good three up, three down baseball, come to a Mustang game as they try to win it all.  Go Mustangs!
