In early November, thirty middle school students took the Oral Vocabulary Test to identify who would advance to the traditional Clay County Spelling Bee.
Twelve students advanced. After 29 rounds and thirty minutes of intense spelling, the following winners were awarded trophies:
1st – Dylan McCumbers (7th grade)
2nd – Madison Paxton (7th grade)
3rd – Hunter Evans (8th grade)
4th – Sawyer Dobbins (6th grade)
5th – Elijah Holcomb (7th grade)
Congratulations to these students on a job well done, and best of luck to Dylan and Maddy as they advance to the Gazette-Mail Regional Spelling Bee at Capital High School in March 2019. The winner of the regional competition will compete at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. in May.
