Last week, kids gathered at the high school each morning to attend Mega Sports Camp.
Mega Sports Camp allows children to come to the high school and choose a sport to practice in for the week. Cheer, soccer, football, or basketball could be chosen by students. Mega Sports Camp is made possible by Northgate Baptist Church of Pittsburg, PA. Northgate Baptist Church members volunteer their time to travel to Clay County to spend time with kids sharing their love for sports. Volunteers shared their wisdom in sports, as well as in sewing classes that were held to help people learn how to sew. Kids had a blast each day and lunch was provided each day.
Each year, members of Northgate Baptist Church help out around the high school, and clean up and build picnic tables and things that need to be done. They volunteer their time to help out our school. Kids look forward to this mid-summer event each year!
Not only do the kids learn about sports, but they have the opportunity to learn about God as well. Each day they have a session at the end of the day before loading busses to head home and they hear the gospel that Jesus loves them.
Jesse Boggs, pastor of Northgate Baptist Church, is a native of Clay County and has worked with the Board of Education for Mega Sports Camp to happen each year. It is a wonderful annual event and a blessing is received not only each day, but for the whole week for those involved.
As well as hosting Mega Sports Camp, Northgate Baptist Church sponsors a free community event on Thursday, the week they are here each year is called “Picnic in the Parking Lot.” This year, live music was given by Alan “Cathead” Johnston, who is a WV fold singer, native from McDowell County. Johnathan Buckner and Chosen Road shared their talents on Friday evening. Food was provided, and drawings were held throughout the evening for free gifts for both youth and adults in attendance. A huge bounce house was set up this year for kids to play on, which was a huge hit!
As said before, kids enjoy the week of Mega Sports Camp and making friends and memories. Clay County appreciates the hard work, dedication and efforts poured into Mega Sports Camp and all the events held during the week. Thank you Northgate Baptist Church!
