The CCMS Lady Mustangs hosted the Lady Hawks of South Harrison this past week on the volleyball court. South Harrison, being the number one team in the conference, was no slouch team, and the Lady Mustangs would have to play flawless volleyball to beat them. The Lady Hawks had suffered just one loss in the season prior to this meeting with the Lady Mustangs. It was definitely a break out the tissue box for the Lady Hawks on this night. The Lady Mustang JV came out ready to take the butter off the Lady Hawk JV biscuit and that they did. The Lady Mustang JV outscored them 25-11, 19-25 and 25-19 to win the match.
Varsity was up next and while South Harrison is a good team that rarely makes mistakes, the Lady Mustangs were well prepared for the game and had the spit ready to shish kabob some Hawks. The Lady Mustangs made very few mistakes which, in the game of volleyball, usually determine the fate of a team.
The Lady Hawks came out swinging in the first game but knew right away that the Lady Mustangs was out to pluck some feathers. It was a tight game and one that would take finger nails to the knuckle. Both teams came out firing and the lead went either way. The Lady Mustangs put an end to the game with a nail biter as they stood there with their smoking gun beating the Lady Hawks in the first game 25-23.
Once the Lady Hawks pulled their chins off the floor, it was down to business in the second game. It was yet another nail biter as both teams were relentless in their pursuit of a win. In the end, however, the Lady Hawks beat the Lady Mustangs 24-25.
A third game had to be played to break the tie and it was a doozie. Two titans of volleyball faced off in a final matchup that would determine who was at the head of the lunch line. The game started, and it was a fight to the finish as both teams brought out the pitchforks and torches. The Lady Mustangs got down to the business of mistake free volleyball and started kicking sand in their faces. When the decibels died down in the gym, it was the Lady Mustangs beating the #1 Lady Hawks 25-23.
It was a big win for the girls that only further proves that they can beat anybody, and the sweet smell of the championship is in their grasp. The girls were not finished, though, and took their show on the road to Walton to compete in a tri match with Walton and Geary. It was like watching a rhino use toe nail clippers…fun to watch but in the end you knew the clippers would lose. The Lady Mustangs sent both teams packing on their own home turf. All of the Lady Mustangs looked as though their skills were oiled and greased up for the rest of the season and hopefully a chance to bring home the gold at the CWVAC tournament.
The Lady Mustangs have just two more games this week before the finals at the championship; they will host Braxton at home Monday night and will be on the road to Ravenswood on Tuesday. The CWVAC Championship will be on Saturday at South Harrison and the games start at 9:00 AM. Bring it home Lady Mustangs!
