On April 19, 2018 a group of 35 high school students and teachers travelled to Williams River to dig ramps for the H.E. White ramp dinner.
While there, they dug about 700 pounds of ramps. Without the community’s support, this dinner would be nonexistent. It takes around 3,000 pounds of ramps, along with large amounts of beans, corn, ham, green beans, and desserts to pull off this humongous dinner.
Digging the ramps is only one part of the preparation process. Cleaning ramps is what goes on at this little school from the first part of April until the Dinner in May. These amazing ladies will come out every evening to help with this task. There is nothing like sitting and cleaning ramps with these women. You will hear the laughter of children playing in the background while you catch up and hear them reminisce about things years ago. Shirly Faulkner has been helping with this dinner since her daughter attended this school 45 years ago. She now has great grandchildren that attend and is there almost every day to help get ready for this event.
Lynn Jones Taylor says she had a flash back from the “good ole days” while helping last week. She says it’s been a long time since she was able to help, and loved reminiscing about how they always worked together to accomplish great things for the kids and community. That is what it’s all about, the KIDS. This community will rise up to the task, like years before, to make ramp dinner number 49 one of the best it has been. Audrea Gould, PTO President, says that it takes the help of many and that without the community it couldn’t be done. All the hard work put in is greatly appreciated.
If you would like to donate, dessert donations are needed. So, make your favorite desserts and help out the kids at H.E. White. You can drop off donations at the school May 4-May 5
The Ramp Dinner will be Sunday, May 6, from 11 a.m.- 3 p.m. at $10 per meal.
“Come on over and grab some of the best ramps you’ll ever eat!”
