During the flood last year, people were stranded at the Elkview shopping mall because flood waters washed out the culvert and the bridge that provided access to the main road collapsed around 8:30 p.m.
People who were at the shopping center during the time were stranded after the flood hit on June 23, 2016. Kmart allowed people stranded in the plaza to stay the night in the business. Kroger sat up a food bar in the deli and cooked barbeque on the grill at no charge. There were approximately 100 people stranded at the shopping center. A gravel road had to be cut down the mountain to 84 lumber for people to get their cars out. It has been a long process getting the bridge approved to be built back. People have lost their jobs, some were lucky to be transferred within their employer business to a different location. The Elkview shopping center was a frequent place for so many.
Everyone is relieved and happy that it is finally back open. 23 of the 26 businesses are expected to return to the Elkview Shopping Center.
