After an enjoyable term of 28 years and 11 months serving on the Board of Education comes to an end, Dr. R. B. Legg is retiring. Dr. Legg became a board member when his youngest child was just 4 years old and he became president 17 years ago. He had children in school and he wanted to be able to help make a difference in the school system for it to be an enjoyable experience for all kids.
Dr. Legg has had many wonderful memories from being a member on the Board of Education, he really enjoys graduation and helping give certificates to the little children at the Hall of Fame Banquet each year. It is also nice to be able for Dr. Legg or any other board member to get online and look at the stats and see that Clay County Schools are in the top 10% on academics.
One of Dr. Legg’s greatest accomplishments while on the board was back in the old days when he balanced the budget books before there was an excess levy. He enjoys any activity the board is involved in with the kids and he least enjoyed the school closures meetings that happened several years ago.
While a board member, Dr. Legg has attended over 1,000 board meetings and has attended several meetings in Charleston or other parts of the state. Dr. Legg gave a little advice for new board members and the main thing, he says, is to not have or misuse social media if you have it.
There are a few people who Dr. Legg wanted to give credit to, Jim Dawson, was the superintendent for 21 years on a one year contract. Don Moore, who was the Assistant Superintendent and J.D. Jimmy Morris, who was a great asset to the board and has done a lot of things for the betterment of the school system.
One of Dr. Legg’s greatest achievements was that he was re-elected consecutively for 7 terms in a row. Dr. Legg definitely put the well being of the schools and the students, staff and workers in his best interest. He now plans on spending time with his family, volunteering as a tutor at the high school and maybe other schools in the future, and helping the schools in any way he can.
Thank you, Dr. R.B. Legg for your service on the board and for all that you have done for the school system and its students and staff!
