Congratulations to Sawyer Dobbins for receiving the Big Otter Elementary Citizenship And School Spirit Award.
To be eligible for this award, a student must maintain high scholastic achievement, participate in school activities, participate in extra-curricular activities, display an understanding of civic responsibility, demonstrate good character and have good attendance.
Sawyer has had an exceptional year. He earned straight A’s all year long, he earned a distinguished score in reading on the WV Summative Assessment, he was inducted into the James G. Dawson Hall of Fame, he came in 6th place in the Clay County Spelling Bee and he completed the fifth grade reasoning minds curriculum. Sawyer also participated in numerous school activities, including but not limited to the school literacy fair where he secured a 1st place win in fifth grade for his impersonation of Donald Trump reviewing the book Fire & Fury: Inside the Trump White House. He was also the only fifth grade student to represent Big Otter in the Clay High School Market Fair where he made and sold felt characters and painted pet rocks.
Additionally, Sawyer participated in numerous other school activities including 4-H, STEM camp, Readers are Leaders and choir, he won most original costume in the school Halloween costume contest, he honored his uncle Tracy Dobbins for his military service at the school Veteran’s Day Program, he participated in the afterschool Christmas program, he was a narrator of the school play (Aladdin), and he authored and illustrated the comics section in the school newspaper, Braves Best News. Indeed, he was instrumental in working with the school administration and staff to get the paper re-started after several years of hiatus. He was voted by his classmates as most likely to become a politician and most likely to become a lawyer.
In addition to his numerous school activities, Sawyer was also an offensive and defensive end on the Clay County Panthers Intermediate Football A Team, he was voted all-tournament by league coaches on the Big Otter Braves Basketball A Team, he won the Team Leader Award on his U12 spring soccer team, and he had a lead role in the King’s Cove Aquatics Swim Program at Clay Pool. Finally, Sawyer was selected as Mrs. Sheran Helmick’s first Super Leader of the school year (for students who show good character and are positive role models) and he earned faithful attendance. He is the son of Philip and Stephanie Dobbins of Left Hand, WV.
Best of luck to Sawyer as he leaves Big Otter Elementary and moves on to Clay County Middle School next year.
