By Allen Hamrick

It was flappers, drama and romance with a pinch of a superiority complex as Charleston – The Roaring Twenties came to life on the CCHS stage last week.  On Tuesday and Wednesday, 29 actors and actresses performed the comedy drama of stolen fake diamonds and life in the 20’s.  Students and parents were riveted to their seats as sinister up and coming mobsters attempted to steal the coveted diamond necklace worth alleged millions.  The lead role of Polly Pepper was played impressively by Abigail Grandon to give life to a rebellious young girl who chose the flapper life as a means to get what she wanted and ditch the status quo life that society dictated.  Polly was chased by an equally haughty and self-important young Texan named Buck Wayne played by Eddy Metheney who brought arrogance to a new light.

It was youth rebellion at its finest as short dresses, short hair, heavily caked faces and wild flirting was the rule and not the exception.  It was the roaring 20’s and the CCHS theater group brought it to life with humor and drama.  The ability to make those who know you see you as a different person is what separates good acting from great acting.  All the cast did a great job – from the Ziegfeld girls to the Duke and Duchess, and words can’t describe some of the events that unfolded. Those in attendance left the auditorium discussing and laughing about their favorite parts.

Congratulations go out to those involved.  Tara Tanner did a crack up job as the director along with light and sound by McKenzie Osborne and set design overseen by Jada Adkins. The CCHS Theater group will have a spring performance, and you will not want to miss it… as an added bonus, the show comes with dinner.  The CCHS stage is alive because of the CCHS Thespians. We look forward to the spring to see what they come up with next.  I assure you, it will be good.   Theater is an experience for the players and the audience to escape everyday life, become absorbed with the story and the characters and forget problems outside the doors.  Theater can promote education and instill confidence by provoking thought and communication.  Mrs. Tanner has compiled a great group that has done just that and will bring whatever story they are given to life.
