Big Otter Elementary School held its fifth grade ceremony and reception on May 24. The students reflected on the year with a video slide show of all they have accomplished. Clay Middle School principal Leslie Goe spoke to the group about “Looking to the Future.” Sixth grade student Natalie Tanner explained to the fifth graders what they can expect upon coming to CCMS in her speech, “From One Student to Another.” Finally, Dustin Vaughan, fifth grade teacher, spoke eloquently about each student. He discussed their strengths, progress throughout the year, and contributions to the classroom. His genuineness and sincerity were evident. The students were each awarded a medallion and a certificate noting their promotion to sixth grade.
Wrapping up the ceremony, Principal Anthony Boggs presented two awards. The first, the Brave Award, is given to a student who is viewed by his classmates as friendly and outgoing, one who displays good character, and is a positive influence on his peers. It is voted on by the students. The Brave Award winner was Jace Covarrubias. Finally, Mr. Boggs presented the Principal’s Award. It is given to a student based on outstanding academics, citizenship, leadership and character. This includes having a good work ethic, positive attitude, and good attendance. This year’s winner was Gunner Dobbins. Gunner earned straight A’s throughout the year, was in the top five (GPA) of his class, placed fourth in the county spelling bee, exceeded standards on the WV Summative Assessment (ELA), was inducted into the James G. Dawson Hall of Fame, met the school’s Accelerated Reader fifth grade goal, and served as class ambassador.
Following the ceremony, the students and their families were invited to a reception in the cafeteria where they were treated to sandwiches, drinks and dessert. Best wishes to the fifth-grade class as they move on to middle school.
