December 1958

Girl ….

Her eyes are blue,
Her hair is brown,
In this school she’s not new,
But she’s new in town.
Her favorite color is red,
Her favorite car is a Ford, so it’s said.
She has a smile for everyone,
But a tired face when the day is done
Her levis she does wear,
In city, town, or anywhere.
She’s not slim, she’s just right,
The boys all watch her out of sight.
Like Lean Jean, she’s seventeen,
She is mighty like a queen,
In familiar places she is seen.
In school she’s not mean, but she’s always o the beam,
She says to say she misses you,
She’s the Mystery Student in this issue.

Mystery Students

Don’t misunderstand me! I want you to know that I’m not a square. I know what gives. I wear dungarees with a little cuff on the bottom and I wear a crew cut. I keep my shirt collar up, real sharp.

I’m really a big town type. I read “Dick Tracy,” and I know when and what time “Dragnet” comes on television. So you see I know what its all about. I’m also a Buffalo Basketball fan. They are one of the best teams Widen High has ever had. I’m in the ninth grade. I have blue eyes and I am 4 foot 11 inches tall. You see, I’m not a square. My favorite song, food, and color are: “Tom Dooley”, Watermelon, and red. Can you guess who I am?

The Mystery Students for last month were Carolene Miller and Kyle Barnette.

Widen High School

Dear Santa,
Now that Christmas is near there are a few things we students of Widen High would like to have.
We are sure that when you read of these small requests you will fill your bag with them, happily.
Seventh grade would like to have an opportunity to appear on Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Show.
Abe Holmes needs the will to work in Journalism.
Eighth grade would like “takers” for their date-bait.
Mike Miller would like a “girlfriend”.
Eighth grade wants to grow enough to take the Ninth’s place next year.
Ninth grade would like to have bottles to bottle their vitality.
Victor Frame wants a girl friend for his “Dear Joe” column.
Twelfth grade needs bikes to make the 3-mile trip.
Brenda Butcher wants a chance to prove her dramatic talent in Hollywood.
Keith (Casey) Jones only needs a baseball bat.
Carol Hamrick, well, her brother says she needs some energy. But you can be the judge of that!
Eleventh grade wants a place to have the Junior-Senior Prom.
Joyce Workman wants—just a car.
Charles Barrett needs a frame for his smile.
David Wilson wants a ride to Charleston to see “Anna Marie”

Construction of federal-aid highways in West Virginia has been given a boost through the use of attorneys outside the SRC legal staff. This speed-up has been accomplished in the matter of acquiring rights of way. Since the courts have ruled that rendering a title opinion constitutes a practice of law, the Commission hires local attorneys who are familiar with property in their counties. Such work is hired out only on federal-aid projects on which the state is reimbursed for part of the legal costs.

DRAMATIC CLUB NEWS

The Footlighters Club will again award trophies to the Best Actor and Actresses of the year.
Candidates for this honor are selected during the school year from students who take parts in class and club assembly programs. These selections are made only from those who have memorized spoken parts. They are judged by their ease of manner, excellence of performance, and depth of characterization. The monthly winners are picked by the club, but the final results will be decided by a committee composed of the faculty members. These awards will be made at the regular Awards Day assembly in May.
Members of the club are vigorously practicing on the play and skit that are to be presented in the high school assembly December 31.
Pens and charms are being ordered by members of the club. They should be here after Christmas.
