Widen Band Boosters

A regular meeting of the Widen Band Boosters’ Club was held on the night of November 3, 1958, in the Library of the Widen School building.

It was resolved to give a vote of thanks to Mr. Harry E. Baer, principal of the Widen School System, for taking care of the purchase and sale of band supplies. Mr. Baer has always been helpful in matters pertaining to the Band and all its needs.

Mr. Gerald Simmons, band director, told the Club members that insurance to cover band uniforms, instruments and equipment had been purchased and was in effect.

Mr. Simmons also told the Club that new uniforms for new band members had been ordered and shipment is expected soon.

The band director discussed at length a County Band Clinic, wherein Widen and Clay bands would practice together and the outstanding members from each band would play in concerts to be held at Widen and at Clay. This would be to stimulate interest in band playing.

Several projects to make money were talked about, among which was the selling of hot dogs. This particular project has been quite successful during the past few weeks—on Saturday nights at the Legion Hall, at the polls on election day, etc.

On Saturday night, November 22, 1958, a turkey dinner was held at the Dille School Building. This dinner was sponsored by the Widen Band Boosters’ Club and the proceeds will go toward the purchase of a Kettle Drum for the Band.

Mrs. Dixie Donohue is in charge of the fund drive to raise money for a Kettle Drum and, therefore, was in charge of this dinner.

Widen Notes

It just doesn’t seem possible that Christmas is only a month away but it’s true. This is Thanksgiving week and after this week it will be less than a month ’till Christmas. How time flies! School will close for the Thanksgiving holidays after classes on Wednesday, November 26th and will resume December 1st.

A wedding of interest took place this month when Ruby Lee Holcomb became the bride of Mr. Danny Rapp. Ruby Lee is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Holcomb and Danny is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Rapp, all of Nicholas Street. The wedding took place on the evening of November 1 at the home of Rev. Ernest Hammack, pastor of the Widen Baptist Church, who performed the ceremony. Ruby Lee is a senior at Widen High School and Danny is a recent graduate of Widen High and is now employed by the Elk River Coal and Lumber Company. Best of luck to this personable and well liked young couple!

Mr. and Mrs. Ed Mullins announce the birth of a son, November 1, 1958 at the Charleston General Hospital. The baby has been named Henry Edward Mullins, Jr. Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Basil Ellis of Nicholas Street and Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. “Russ” Mullins of Kanawha Street.

Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Ellis also boast the arrival of another new grandson who arrived on October 28th. This new arrival is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Ellis. The baby’s name is Robert Douglas and weighed 7 pounds, 9 ounces at birth.

Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Dodrill, Jr. announce the birth of a son, Lewis Dane, born October 22, 1958, at the Charleston General Hospital. The baby weighed 5 pounds and 6 ounces.

Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Rapp again lost all their household furnishings and clothing when their home burned on the afternoon of October 27th. The fire had such a start before it was discovered, that the smoke and heat made it impossible to get anything out of the building. Firemen did an excellent job of controlling the fire and there was very little damage to adjacent houses.

Mrs. Dan Nicholas of Roane Street has returned home after a three month visit in Fontana, California. While in California Mrs. Nicholas divided her time between a son, Ted Nicholas and a daughter, Mrs. Edith Beach. Mrs. Nicholas informs us that two of her children have become parents during October. Mr. and Mrs. Spud Nicholas have a new son, Bruce Allen and Mr. and Mrs. Jay Beach (daughter Edith) also have a new son, Jerry Jay Beach.

Mr. and Mrs. Harold Baughman visited with Mr.and Mrs. Newman Baughman during the week-end of November 8th.

Mrs. Wanda Winter has been a patient in the Charleston General Hospital where she underwent major surgery the last of October. She is now recouperating at her home in Clay, W. Va.

Mrs. Dimple L. McMillion has returned to her duties as Cashier of the Bank of Widen after an extended vacation. Mrs. “Mac” visited with her children while on vacation and also traveled around the country a great deal. Her travels took her all the way West to California and South to Florida. It’s nice to have her back at her desk, we’ve missed her!
