The STEM ambassador for Clay County, Morgan McMinn and the extension agent, Michael Shamblin, along with some volunteers, held a camp this past week at Maysel Park. It was a day camp from 11:00AM -4:00PM. Each day, the children who attended got to do different activities and experiments and outside activities. Lunch was provided for the children each day.
On Wednesday, they made catapults, helicopters, and magic bracelets. The magic bracelets had a special bead on it that when the UV rays from the sun hit the beads, they turned different colors. Ms. McMinn put sunscreen on some sandwich baggies and the children went outside and watched their beads turn different colors from the UV rays. Each child took one of the bags with sunscreen on it and put their bracelet in to show how the sun screen protects our skin from the UV rays. 15 SPF and 50 SPF were used.
Other activities were playing with and learning about bubbles, making robots, doodle bots, and playing Frisbee. Each activity or experiment they did had a science lesson to go along with it. The children as well as the adults enjoyed themselves each day.
