IRS, State Free File Program Empowers Eligible West Virginians To File Their Taxes Online At No Cost

Charles Town, WV – At 9 a.m. Monday, March 3, 2014, Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) will be in Charles Town to urge lower and moderate income West Virginians to use the Free File program to prepare and file their taxes for free.

Following opening remarks from Congresswoman Capito and others, presenters will lead a training workshop for community organizations to learn how to use the Free File program.

The Free File program is a partnership between the Internal Revenue Service and brand-name tax software companies that provides eligible taxpayers free use of their tax software products. Eligible West Virginians can file both their federal and state returns for free because West Virginia has entered into the same partnership with several of these tax software companies.

In general, individuals and families with an adjusted gross income of $58,000 or less can use Free File, which not only saves on the cost of tax preparation but helps taxpayers keep as much of their hard-earned refund as possible. For example, the commercial tax software products available through Free File make it easy for filers to determine if they are eligible for the earned income tax credit (EITC), a refundable federal tax credit that can put up to $6,000 back in working taxpayers’ pockets. It is estimated that between 20 to 25 percent of eligible taxpayers fail to claim it each year.
