Members of the Clay County Landmarks Commission and Historical Society met on September 6 at Jerry Stover’s home for a short meeting which preceded their annual picnic.
Present were Sandra Claybrook, Eloise Boggs, Jerry Stover, Marlene Potasnik, Jeanine Samples, Garrett Samples, Jim Miller, Betty Robinson and her daughter.
President Jerry Stover called the meeting to order. The minutes of our August meeting were approved and Sandra gave the treasurer’s report.
Sandra announced that the package from Joan Campbell containing old geologic maps relating to the mining industry in clay County had just arrived. A quick look indicated that there are some beautiful maps of Clay County in the collection, all relating to Clay County coal lands. A note of thanks will be sent to Joan Campbell.
Karen Burdette continues to updated cemetery information. Since our last edition (4th) was published in 2011, she had amassed many pages of new information – new graves and additional cemeteries. It may be time to think of publishing a supplement to the 4th edition or to publish a new 5th edition.
We were very happy to have Betty back with us, well on the way to recovery after an automobile accident.
The meeting was adjourned, after which a pot-luck picnic and gab-fest were thoroughly enjoyed on Jerry’s back enclosed porch.
The next meeting is Wednesday, October 4, at 1 p.m. at the Clay County Library.
