The Clay County Landmarks Commission and Historical Society met Wednesday, April 6, 2016 in the Clay County Library. Present were Jeanine Samples, Betty J. Robinson, Jim Miller, Sandra Claybrook and Eloise Boggs. Jim distributed copies of the agenda which was prepared by President Jerry Stover. Because of family responsibilities, Jerry was unable to attend the meeting.
PRESIDENTS REPORT
Whom do we need to thank (in the news letter) for the work being done? We thank those who attend the Tuesday workdays when they can: Jim Miller, Sandra Claybrook, Karen Burdette, Jeanine Samples, Marlene Potasnik, Lenore Pettit, Pat Chapman and whoever else can come. The library in the Old Courthouse is open for visitors on Tuesdays, 9 to 2. For confirmation that someone will be there, visitors may call Sandra at 304-286-2212 (she leaves home for Clay around 8AM on Tuesday).
For the newsletter, Now & Then: Eloise sends the copy-ready issue to the Frog Pond Printery new the beginning of each quarter (Jan., April, July and Oct.) Alan Exline prints between 400 & 500 copies and delivers the finished product to the library or wherever the mailing crew decides to work (usually the lower section of the Clay County Library). Meanwhile, Jim has updated mailing labels for Ronnie Hamrick to print. The mailing crew consists of Sandra and Jim and whoever of the Tuesday crew mentioned above can come on that day. They staple, apply mailing labels to about 320 copies and sort them by zip codes and deliver them to Jerry who will mail them at the Procious P.O. Bulk mailing: Jerry is making preparation to give this task to Jeanine.
Committee Reports:
• Now & Then: Eloise announced that the Spring issue has been sent to the printer.
• Cemeteries: Karen, Lenore and Pat are still finding unlisted cemeteries. Betty mentioned cemeteries in her area (Otter District). Karen is working on an extended project: documenting unmarked graves.
• Building report: Nothing new to report.
• Garnie Testa Book: We are still gathering information on teachers and schools.
Old Business: A decision was made to accept Paul Jones’ offer of supplying family history “starter kits.” Paul’s suggestion was that they be offered for sale at the Apple Festival
New Business: We presented to Shelia Thorne for the Clay County Library a copy of the book, Heroes Among Us, a product of the West Virginia Veterans’ Legacy Project, a Glenville State of West Virginia veterans who participated in the project.
The next meeting will be held Wednesday, May 4, 2016, 1:00PM, Clay County Library.
