The Charleston Ballet today announced the lineup for their 62nd season, Ballet And Beyond. The 2017-2018 season includes a three act mixed-bill performance, The Nutcracker, and Don Quixote.
“As the art of dance evolves, so do our seasons at the Charleston Ballet. For over 60 years, our performances have taken our audiences beyond the image of rustling tutus and classical music, exposing our community to modern masterpieces and innovative collaborations,” said Artistic Director and CEO Kim Pauley. “Our upcoming season, Ballet And Beyond, builds on that theme. We are excited to revisit classical favorites and introduce never before seen works.”
October’s performance, Classic, Country & Rock ‘N Roll, will be a mixed-bill performance featuring Poulenc Piano Concerto, a contemporary work created in the classic style; square dance, a bluegrass piece of “toe-tapping fun” choreographed to Senator Robert C. Byrd’s fiddle music; and a new rock ‘n roll ballet. Performances are October 20-21, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. at the Civic Center Little Theater.
The holiday favorite, The Nutcracker, returns this December with the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra. Over 170 dancers, musicians, and singers take part in this holiday favorite. Performances are December 8, 2017, at 7:30 p.m. and December 9, 2017, at 2 p.m. at the Clay Center. There will also be two daytime school performances in connection with the Clay Center’s new children exhibits.
Making its Charleston debut, Don Quixote follows the titular character and his sidekick Sancho Panza on their quest for adventure. 13th century Barcelona comes to life with bravura Spanish dancing, gypsy kings, and windmills. Performances take place March 2-3, 2018 at 7:30 p.m. at the Civic Center Little Theater.
