The West Virginia Maple Syrup Producers Association Annual Meeting and Maple Competition will take place Saturday, May 14 in Weston. The gathering draws maple-preneurs from across the state to talk about production numbers, techniques, education and sales.
The meeting begins at 9:30 A.M. at the West Virginia Department of Agriculture’s Weston Field Office. The 2016 West Virginia Maple Competition will follow at 1 p.m. Producers have the chance to enter their maple products, from syrup and cream to candy and sugar, for the opportunity of being named best in West Virginia. The judges will be looking for flavor, color and appearance.
It’s been a banner year for maple production growth in West Virginia. The season, which runs from January to March, saw new producers tapping trees and expanding markets both in West Virginia and around the country. The state held its first Maple Open House in March. More than a dozen maple producers and related businesses opened their doors to the public to give folks a look at what goes into making and marketing maple syrup.
All are welcome to attend the annual meeting whether you’re a seasoned maple producer or newly interested in exploring the maple industry. For more information, contact Cathy Hervey at 304-737-1889 or wvmaplesyrupproducers@gmail.com.
