The weather has sure put the vise grip on the sports agenda. With slippery roads and driveways looking like Winter Olympics venues, there were few games that were able to be played. First off, the Lady Mustangs continue on their run to greatness as they still take down the competition one by one. With crazy defense and board busting shots, the Lady Mustangs have put themselves right smack dab in the middle of another championship run. A dominating win against the Lady Jackets on Monday night gave momentum to the Lady Mustangs for this weekend’s tournament. The championship tournament will be held at Webster County this Friday and Saturday, game times as of this writing are a mystery but check with the school early in the week so you will be sure to not miss it. The Mustangs will be in action at Braxton County on the 20th and will start their tournament play at home on the 25th; you also won’t want to miss this.
The Lady Panthers were in action against the Lady Raiders of Roane County this past week. It was nothing short of another great game. Peyton Lucas and Isabelle Haverty combined for 29 points between them, with Isabelle providing the air show with 16 points. The final score of the game was Clay 59 and Roane 35. The girls then travelled to Doddridge County to take on Saint Mary’s in the LKC Championship. It was all Saint Mary’s, however, as the Lady Panthers were out done on the boards, as the sharp shooters couldn’t hit the bull’s eye. The final score was St. Mary’s 57 and Clay 36. The Lady Panthers have just two games left in regular season. On Tuesday night they will play Tolsia at St Albans, and will have one final home game against Scott High School this Friday Night at 7 pm. The girls will have to work out the bugs in their shooting game before these last two home games. With two wins this week, they could be on another run to a state championship.
The Panthers had a tough week dropping both games against Gilmer County and Roane County. Since the weather has played a major role in games this season, check out the updated schedule in this week’s paper. Tuesday night will be parent night for the seniors on the Panther team, and they will bid farewell to the fans and play their last regular season game on the CCHS hardwood. The CCHS wrestling team will be at Calhoun County this Saturday to participate in regional competition. This tournament will showcase the top wrestlers in the state in AA competition. The top four wrestlers in any weight bracket will advance to the state competition in Huntington. All the Clay wrestlers will have a better than average chance of making it to the next level. A lot of sports are crunched together this week so try to get out and support the teams in their final competitions of 2014.
