The science curriculum at Clay High will be much more exciting at the end of this week as students will have the opportunity to get hands on with the aquarium. Through a partnership with Trout Unlimited and the Buffalo Creek Watershed, tenth grade biology students will be incorporating an alternate to the standard curriculum with the introduction of Trout in the Classroom. This week, fingerling brown trout will be brought into the classroom at which time students will be tasked with the responsibility of monitoring tank water quality while caring for the fish. This project gives students the opportunity to engage in stream habitat study, while learning to appreciate water sources and the ecosystems involved.
Once the fish grow to a sustainable size, they will be released into their native habitat, in this case Buffalo Creek. Thanks to Trout Unlimited, the Buffalo Creek Watershed and a number of generous supporters, these students will have a unique learning opportunity that will foster a conservation ethic that will last a lifetime.
