Crime has once again struck Clay County as the stealing spree continues. On Tuesday night, thieves broke into the Clay Christian Service Center and stole thousands of dollars’ worth of groceries. Freezers, shelves and cabinets were stripped of meats, fruits, vegetables and drinks. For nearly 30 years the nonprofit agency has served around 200 low income families within Clay County per month, supplying them with much needed groceries. The center offered daily distribution and they don’t understand why someone would steal food. “From 10:30 to 2:30 if you come in and you need food, you get food,” said operator Freda Auxier. “I have never turned down anybody.”
Although no arrests have been made in the case, Sheriff Garrett Samples says he thinks the crime may be drug related and that he is going to do everything he can to help the owners during this crisis. Others are stepping in to help too. The Black Diamond Girl Scouts organized a food drive to collect donations for the center and plan to deliver those early in the week. Other individuals and organizations have also called and offered to help. If you would like to help the Christian Service Center, stop by their location on Route 16 in Lizemores beside the post office or call 587-7896.
