WorkForce West Virginia is alerting employers in West Virginia to a potential scam from individuals purporting to be from the agency and asking for financial data.
On Thursday, September 4, someone who claimed to be an employee of WorkForce West Virginia contacted an employer by email asking for cancelled checks for unemployment tax contributions. The email was sent from a personal email address and did not come from a WorkForce West Virginia employee. Electronic correspondence from WorkForce West Virginia is sent only from wv.gov addresses.
Any employer who receives a suspicious email is asked to contact WorkForce West Virginia at 1-800-252-5627 or via email at uctaxunit@wv.gov.
The potential scam has been referred to the state Attorney General’s office.
