The Clay County Board of Education met on Monday, November 14, at Clay Elementary School. Dillon McCumbers was the honorary board member during the meeting. He has perfect attendance and the highest GPA in Clay Elementary. Clay Elementary’s motto is “Come to School, Excel, Show Respect.”
LSIC President Vicki Perdue was in attendance on to speak to the board about a couple of requests the school has. They are in need of a couple A/C units in the gym, dusk-to-dawn lights on the playground and the upper parking lot, the preschool outdoor area resurfaced and more playground equipment.
The meeting proceeded with the following action items:
The board approved policy GBJ-A, effective immediately, which limits central office administrator compensation for employees with less than 20 years of service. The board approved the excess-levy call for the five-year period, July 1, 2017, through June 30, 2022, at the same rate of the current levy. The board approved the date of January 28, 2017, as the excess levy election date.
The employment of Jamie Neely as a fourth grade teacher in residence at Clay Elementary School, beginning Tuesday, January 3, 2017, pending certification, was approved. The employment of Jamie Neely as a fourth grade teacher at Clay Elementary school, effective immediately upon completion of the teacher in residence contract and pending graduation from WV State University with teacher certification, was approved. The transfer of Diana Collins from an 11-month custodian at Clay High to a 10-month custodian at Clay High was approved, effective immediately. The employment of Lisa Rhodes as an 11-month custodian at Clay High, effective immediately, was approved.
A correction to the work experience record for Michelle Paxton was approved. This correction will return one additional year of work experience to her record which had previously been omitted due to a clerical error. Her rate of pay will be adjusted accordingly to reflect the correction. This is not a raise. This is simply a correction to a mistake that has been made throughout the years.
A multi-classification of Maxine Miller as a bus operator/handman/truck driver was approved, effective November 1. The employment of Kim Blake as a substitute teacher, pending certification, was approved. The employment of Melissa McMillian as bus operator for bus no. 58, effective November 1, was approved. This is James Edwards’ former position. The employment of Jared Fitzwater as director of student services/administrative assistant to the superintendent was approved.
Katelyn Thomas was approved for transfer from special education at Clay High to a position of permanent substitute at clay high for the remainder of the 2016-2017 school year. Harvey Church was approved as a volunteer wrestling coach at Clay High School for the 2016-2017 school year. Robert Morris was approved as a volunteer wrestling coach for Clay Middle School. The appointment of Karla Pierson as Clay County Schools’ Representative for the Unmet Needs Resource Committee was approved. The critical needs list was approved to include the following academic areas: elementary: elementary education, school psychologist, special education, Title I reading specialist; Secondary: business education, health science, mathematics, physics, science, special education. These have been approved by West Virginia Code which specifies that a retired teacher working in a critical needs area may work more than the 140 day limit in a school year.
The next board of education meeting will be held next week, Monday, November 28, at 6 p.m. at the board of education office.
