I will say this – if you ever need an army when war takes over the land, put the Lady Mustangs on the front line with ball bats. They could rewrite history and be called The Lady Mustang wonder girls. They are tough, bring a fight to every game and leave it all in the dust, win or lose. They use a bat like a shark uses its teeth – swift and deadly. They are like poetry in motion, and if you saw last week’s games, you know what I’m talking about. The girls faced off against the always dangerous Braxton and Valley-Fayette teams, and both opposing teams needed medics to stop the agony of defeat at the end of the third inning. It was plain ol’ butt kicking at the hands of the Lady Mustangs.
The Lady Mustangs got their bats heated up in the first game against Valley early in the week. There isn’t much one can say about the game other than, “Call Grandma to warm up the cookies and start pouring the milk.” This game was over when the Lady Mustangs went to bat. At the end of the first inning, the score was already out of reach for any chance of a win for Valley. When the dust settled and the sun hid itself behind the mountains, the game finished in three innings by the final score of 16-1. On the hill for the Lady Mustangs was Roxy Schoolcraft who threw enough English to write a book on the subject. Kourtney Murphy came in for the final inning and drove nails in the coffin for Valley with some absolute heat from her gun arm. That girl can send some steam.
Next up on the chopping block was Braxton, and it was the same song and dance as the Lady Mustangs bats heated up with Layla Stewart and Chloe Nine both having an inside the park home run. When the dust settled in the mitts and all the bubble gum was swallowed, the final score stood at 10-5, Lady Mustangs. Plainly put, the Lady Mustangs are a softball machine.
Friday night was 8th grade night as the team said farewell to nine girls who have played as a team for a while now and are some of the best, on and off the field, that have put on the Lady Mustang uniform. They will be missed but will move on to CCHS to play again next year. The Lady Mustangs will face the Lady Bears of Summersville Monday night in the first round of the playoffs. These two teams, the Lady Mustangs and the Lady Bears, are nearly equal in strength and abilities, and it will come down to who wants to win more. The Lady Mustangs can match bats with anyone on the diamond, and they will be tested against the Lady Bears of Summersville. Go Lady Mustangs!
