Students compete in Math Field Day 2024

During the month of February, Clay County students from elementary, middle and high school, grades 4 through 12, competed for the honor of representing their school and county at the Regional Math Field Day for Boone, Clay, Kanawha and Putnam counties being held on Feb. 27 on the campus of the University of Charleston. 

With a written test, mental math exercises, an estimation computation event and physical estimation stations, students showed off their math skills and earned bragging rights as the best math students that Clay County has to offer. These boys and girls put a lot of thought and expertise on the table to bring home the trophy and to take it the next level. Congratulations to them all! 

Fourth grade results are: 1st place Jenna Paxton, Big Otter Elementary, 2nd place River Schoolcraft, Clay Elementary, 3rd place Lyla Titus, Big Otter Elementary and Alternate Makayla Detamore, Lizemore Elementary. 

Fifth grade results are: 1st place Colton Hersman, Clay Elementary, 2nd place Mason James, Big Otter Elementary, 3rd place Silas Corwell, Clay Elementary and Alternate Carson Brown, Clay Elementary. 

Clay Middle School results are: 6th grade 1st place William Fields, 2nd place Jackson Cantrell, 3rd place Kinley Ramsey and alternate is Gunner Dobbins; 7th grade 1st place Alex Holcomb, 2nd place Autumn Thompson, 3rd place Alex Jennings and alternate is Levi Rogers; 8th grade 1st place Brooke Cliver, 2nd place Gabe Shamblin, 3rd place Gabby Cottrell and alternate is Matthew Neely. 

Clay County High School will be represented by ninth graders Alivia Gilliland, Sophia Berberich and Dakota James. The high school team for grades 10 – 12 will be Evie Young, Gracie Champ, Makia Bartsch, Jaxon Brown, Luke Hill, Isaac Brown, Dylan McCumbers, Easton Edwards, Olivia Berberich and McKenzie Edwards.
