Sports at a crawl this week

It has been a tough week for sports in this county. Winter time clashed with summer for a couple of days and sent the snowmen packing. Winter came back with a right hook and knocked the warm spell off the coast and back to the south.

In doing so, people were left to dig out of the snow and ice and being a popsicle was the rule once again. The warm spell brought out spring fever and the battle of the fronts sent a lot of people to bed with the flu.  However, there were a couple of games that got to be played on the courts.

The Lady Panthers squared off against Gilmer between the warm spell and slick roads.  Neither team really pulled out all the stops in the game, but the Lady Panthers did enough to get the win. The Lady Panthers led the majority of the game, but Gilmer kept it tight most of the time. Erica Boggs was the top gun hitting for 16 points in the game, and Marissa Williams followed that up with 12 points of her own. This game was a needed win for the Lady Panthers as the season starts over the hump in the schedule heading to the end. The Lady Panthers record improved to 7-4.

The Webster game was cancelled due to battles being fought on other fronts. The Lady Panthers will be home once again on Thursday night against Braxton. The last time the two teams met, it was an extra low scoring game; hopefully this time the Lady Panthers will zero in on the hoops and start burning the net up. The Panthers had the week off due to the weather but will pick it up again this week against Fayettville, Gilmer and Calhoun. The Panthers are 4 and 4 on the season.

The CCMS Mustang basketball team got a game in this past week butting heads with Calhoun County. Curtis Litton continues to smash the boards scoring 29 points in the game en route to a 47-33 romp of Calhoun. The boys have been a force on the courts this season and stand a chance of bringing the gold home again to the halls of CCMS.  With any luck at all, the season will get back to normal for both schools this week and games will once again get underway. Both wrestling teams will be in action this weekend. The Panther team will travel to Lewis County, and the Mustangs will be in action in Huntington at the WSAZ Classic, also known to wrestlers as the Z’s. If you can shovel out, get out and catch a game.
