The Mustang wrestling team has seen some war on the floor over the years, and with the new team and a new coach, this season will prove to be no less than great.
The team has grown in experience, and the boys are bringing home some first place finishes. The wrestlers were on the road this past week at the Hayes Middle School Invitational and showed that the CCMS Middle School wrestling program is back and will be a power house this season.
On Friday evening and Saturday, the Mustangs took their game to the mat and, as usual, came out on top most of the time. With 12 teams on the docket, it would be a tough tournament for the Mustangs. When the smoke cleared and all the sweat was cleaned up, the Mustangs took home a much-deserved, second place trophy.
Riley Perkins, Jakob Legg, and Colten Casto took individual championship titles, while Gene Sams took third in his weight class. Richard Triplett and Blake Sontos took fourth — pretty good stuff considering they faced tough odds as many of the wrestlers were pitted against the best in the state at the middle school level.
Win or lose, they pounded the so-called best into the rubber, and let other teams know they were there and do not give pity or quarter and ask none in return. The Mustangs are gladiators looking for a stadium and are out to put Clay County on the map again in wrestling.
Their next match will be at Huntington this weekend on Friday and Saturday at the WSAZ tournament. This will be the first time in a long time that they have been to this tournament, and they have the opportunity to bring home some gold.
Go Mustangs!
