The Panther wrestling team and the Mustang wrestling team were on the road this week for the WSAZ tournament. First, however, it was the Mustangs in a quad match at Elkveiw to warm up for the weekend. Westside, Sissonville, Clay and Elkview participated in the event. The Mustangs tore the mat up in their matches against Westside and Sissonville, winning both matchups. Then they went head to head with Elkview and did pretty well but lost some key matches that would have got them over the top. The Mustangs placed second in the tournament, and it was a good primer for the super tough competition at the WSAZ tournament in Huntington.
Both wrestling teams have been in some wars on the mats this season but nothing like that at the WSAZ tournament this past weekend. Over sixty teams from three different states came to compete against each other in what was to be some of the toughest wrestling the boys have encountered this year. It was going to be a tough road to haul on, for sure, and keeping your back from getting glued to a mat is a win in and of itself. Zane Minger and James Sears both placed 7th in the tournament for the Panthers, and Pierce Adkins placed 7th for the Mustangs. The Panthers also placed 10th overall as a team. It was a good tournament to work out some bugs before the end of the season. The Mustangs CWVAC championship will be on Saturday, February 3rd at Ravenswood, and the Panthers will be on the mats at Calhoun County. Come out and support the teams.
