The A, B and C Panther intermediate league teams played in the first round playoffs this past weekend, and there was little doubt that the Clay teams would do well against their northern opponents.
The C team travelled to Doddridge County on Saturday to play Tyler County. Tyler County was one of the teams that could have given the Clay C team the most trouble; however, it was not to be on this day. The Clay C team came out and smoked the field, defeating Tyler County by the score of 27-0. Defense stepped up big in this game and stopped any Tyler offense. A and B teams played at Roane County on Sunday. B team was up first and looked a little rusty after a three week break, as the Doddridge B team stood toe to toe with them. After the half, Doddridge B team went ahead in the game 12-13.
That was it, however. The Clay B team tuned up their skills, put some points on the boards and closed the game out defeating Doddridge by the score of 26-13.
A team was up next, and it appeared from the very beginning that Clay would put the icing on the game scoring within the first two minutes. However, St. Mary’s was not intimated by the score and came back with one of their own. The score was tied at 7. That’s where it stayed as the defensive battle started between the two teams. It was the Clay A team that was able to break the defense of St. Mary’s and score another seven before the game ended.
This puts all three Clay teams into the next round of playoffs in Wirt County this Saturday and Sunday. Check with the coaches for the times.
Congratulations to all three teams.
