For the first time in quite a while there was a sporting event in front of the student body at CCMS, as the Mustang wrestling team was pitted against the Braxton Knights on Wednesday, January 4.
These two teams have gone head to head before, and it has always been full on wrestling. This meet was no different. A match in front of the school gives the opportunity for other students to see what the wrestling program is all about and a chance to let the wind out of their lungs. One of the reasons that a match in front of the school is so intense is that the visiting team does not want to lose in front of the home school’s cheering fans. Neither did the Mustangs want some team to come in and place their flag on their home turf.
With the stands chocked full of students, teachers, parents and community supporters, the match was on, and it was a good one. Jacob Legg was up first, and he wasted no time getting points on the board pinning his opponent and giving the Mustangs the lead.
The next Mustang wrestler, Drew Ferrebee, pinned his opponent as well, and the Mustangs went up 12-Nothing. After that, the Mustangs went on a dry spell losing the next four matches, and the score was Knights 24, Mustangs 12.
Gino Sams went on to win his match by points. It wasn’t until Richard Triplett came in and pinned his opponent that the Mustang
s got back on track. The Mustangs won four out of the next six matches, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit. The Mustangs lost to the Knights by the score of Mustangs 36, Knights 46.
It was a close match, and it was good for the students to get to see what dedication and preparation it takes to meet an opponent on the mat. Hopefully in the future more matches or games can be played in front of the student body. Whoever started the trend again, give yourself a pat on the back; it was a good idea.
