Call out the fire department! Bats were combusting into flame as the CCMS Mustang baseball team lectured the Knights of Braxton and the Greyhounds of Valley on the fine art of baseball. Bases became dance floors, and home plate was crossed like busy railroad tracks. The Mustangs sent right hander Joel Elliot to the hill to chill the bats of the Knights. When he handed the hill to teammate Lathan Brown, who came in to relieve pitch, Joel had struck out eight batters in the three innings he pitched and allowed no hits. He was smoking the fast balls, and his dirty stuff had more English than the dictionary. The Knights managed to scatter just one hit in the game. Mustang offense went to work and got the job done scoring four runs in 1st inning, three in the second and four in the third before cooling their jets.
When it was over, it was the Mustangs on top by the score of 12-0. Cooper Collins had two hits and three RBI’s in the game, followed by Pierce Adkins who scored three runs had a hit and with two RBI’s. Lathan Brown scored three times and drove in a run.
Valley was up next on the chopping block, and it didn’t take long for the Greyhounds to figure out that this was a different team and they came to play. Pierce Adkins was on the hill, and the Greyhounds didn’t know what hit them. By the time he threw his first few pitches, they knew they were in trouble. He went on to notch a no hitter on his glove. The Mustang offense didn’t miss a beat – the bats heated up and the runs started crossing the plate. Pierce Adkins hit a triple in the 1st inning to get the bats rolling, and before he was done, hit an inside the park home run with some high speed at the bases. The game was over before it started, and the Mustangs won their 3rd in a row 11-0. They have allowed 0 runs in their first three games. Next up will be the World Series for the Mustangs if they can take down the powerhouse South Harrison Hawks on Tuesday night. They will be at home again on Friday night against Ravenswood . The Mustang bats are fired up and swinging for the fences. They are on a winning streak, and if you like action, bring a chair. You will not want to miss a minute of it. Go Mustangs!
The Lady Mustangs are also smoking the diamonds, going 3 and 0 on the season so far. The Lady Mustangs opened the season on Valley beating them 17-2 and 18 -3 in a double header. One game was canceled, and then it was up against their arch rivals – the Lady Bears from Summersville. This game is one of those games you just know is going to be all out, and it did not disappoint the fans a bit. In the first three innings of the game, it looked as though the Lady Mustangs only had a pair of deuces going into the final hand. It was bluffing time, and down 2-7 in the 3rd, it was time to turn up the heat and put on a poker face. The bluff worked, and by the time the Lady Bears caught on to the hand dealt, the Lady Mustangs tied the score in the bottom of the seventh inning at nine each. It was time for a double down, and the Lady Mustangs went to work putting Lady Bear notches on their bats.
When the marathon was over, it was the Lady Mustangs over the Lady Bears 20-17 in 12 innings. Rylee Murphy was 7-8 at the plate, scoring three times and adding six RBI’s to her bucket list. Brooklyn Morton was the winning pitcher going 7 and 2/3rds innings knocking down nine strike outs. Addison Taylor was also hot with the bats going 5-7 with two runs and four RBI’s. The Lady Mustangs will be home Monday night against Spencer and away at South Harrison on Tuesday. Softball is a game full of bursts of action and intense, edgy moments. If you want to see this for yourself, get to one of the Lady Mustang’s baseball games; they have already kicked some butt, and the season has just begun.
