Mustangs capture Duals Championship

It was a good ol’ fashioned smack down as the Mustang wrestling team took home the first ever Mustang Duals championship, held at Clay Middle School on Saturday.

Eight teams from around the area competed: Clay, Braxton, Summersville, George Washington, Sissonville, Anstead / Walton, Elkins and Webster. There was a tremendous amount of good mat action as the tournament got underway.  Two different pools were put together, and the winner of each pool would butt heads for the championship.

Even though there were several good teams there, fans anticipated that it would be a final matchup between the Mustangs and Braxton. As fate would have it, that’s exactly what happened. Summersville and George Washington battled for 3rd and 4th with Summersville beating GW  33-22.

It came time for the match of the day, the championship. Braxton has long had a reputation for having a great wrestling team and this year was no different, but the Mustangs have one of their own. When it was all over, the Mustangs shocked the middle school wrestling world by defeating a tough Braxton team by the score of 51-22. It was a great tournament.

The Mustangs held school for the most part, proving once again that they are a force to reckon with and will not go down easy. Their first tournament was a big success also due to all those that cooked, cleaned, kept books, clocks, and kept order in the  tumultuous world of wrestling. Congratulations to the Mustangs for keeping the championship trophy in house. The Mustangs will be at Braxton for the conference championships on Saturday, and it will be their last meet of the year. Come out and support the team. Go Mustangs!
