Saturday was the final hoorah for the Mustang wrestling program this season as they participated in the Mona Lisa of wrestling tournaments, the CWVAC Championship, held at Spencer Middle School. The Mustangs have been in the hunt all season at tournaments held throughout the area and have only gotten better and better. This tournament would pit all the finest middle school programs in the region and all those at the top of the food chain. The Mustangs came in strong and were handing out tissues early as it was neither a place to ask for quarter nor a place to give it.
It was a drama from start to finish, to say the least; the Mustangs held their own but were wrestlers down in the lineup so scoring team points would be a tough road to haul. There was a race at the end for individual placement as three Mustangs wrestlers headed to the championship round. The time for listening to coaches and fans was over; it was time to step into the circle to prove your grit – you either win or you don’t, it’s that simple. The Mustang team has always given the fans their money’s worth, and this tournament was no different. In the end, the Mustangs placed seven wrestlers in the top 5: Gabby Belt 3rd, Jason Belt 4th, Jacob Vance 4th, Cade Hamrick 2nd, Kaleb Keen 2nd, Levi Hamrick 4th and Gabe Metheney 2nd.
This has been a great season for the Mustangs. With all the rough weather, they didn’t get in as much wrestling as normal but did themselves proud. They are a powerhouse and always will be the ones to beat at wrestling meets. History proves there have been more state champions produced on the wrestling mats than any other sport in Clay County, and many have went through the CCMS wrestling program. Congratulations to the coaches and the wrestlers on a great season.
