The Lady Mustangs set fire to the diamond winning all three games this past week.  The ladies opened up their season against Walton.

Let’s just say that the Lady Mustangs held class on softball and Walton was absent.  The Lady Mustangs showed no mercy as Laila Varney took to the hill and proceeded to mop the floor with the Lady Tigers.  It was probably the fastest knockout since Frazier and Ali.  Varney faced nine batters and nine batters struck out.   Her pitching was dead on and full of heat. The Lady Tigers didn’t stand a chance.  On the bat side of the ball, the Lady Mustangs Varney went 3-3 with one home run and drove in 8 runs.  Audrey Thomas also went 2-3 with two RBI’s.  The Lady Mustangs racked up nine runs in the first inning and added five more in the second on just seven hits.  The Lady Tigers just couldn’t pass Varney’s English class along with Lady Mustang bats.  Final score Lady Mustangs 14, Lady Tigers 0.

The next game, however, would prove to be a little more intense.  Once again, Varney took to the hill to take down the Lady Knights of Braxton.  The Lady Mustangs came out swinging in the first drawing first blood by scoring four runs.  Gracie Boggs had the hot bat going 3-5 and scoring three runs in the game.  Fonda Withrow was also swinging, going 2-3 at bat with one run scored.  Laila Varney did her part from the hill by striking out 15 batters, walking only four and allowing just seven hits.  The Lady Knights played some good catch up ball but couldn’t go bat to bat with the Lady Mustangs.  When the dust settled, the Lady Mustangs had their second win of the season by the score of Lady Mustangs 13, Lady Knights 7.

On the chopping block next for the Lady Mustangs was Calhoun County.   This game started off like racing turtles as the cold air settled in over the field.  The Lady Red Devils pitcher had a different approach to fast pitch by pitching a lot slower.  The Lady Mustangs couldn’t get a bat on the slow flying ball for the first two innings. It was looking like the wheels fell off, but they just needed to adjust.  Laila Varney again took to the hill and as usual took care of business.  Varney pitched the whole game, allowing just two hits and three runs and striking out 15 batters.

Once they got their eyes adjusted to the ball, the Lady Mustangs went to work in the 3rd inning and started making the bats work scoring six runs. Three of those runs came on a inside the park HR by Laila Varney; she was 2-4 in the game with 4 RBI’s.   Audrey Thomas was 2-3 at the plate, scoring one run.  Brianna Adkins was also 2-4 with 1 RBI.  The Lady Mustangs slowed down a little after that inning but scored four more to end the game with their third win of the week, beating the Lady Red Devils 10-3.

The Lady Mustangs are getting the job done on defense and offense and are turning the diamond into their own party every time they hit the field.  They will have two double headers this week against Cross Lanes Christian away on Monday night and Spencer Middle on Tuesday night at home.  These game will be a good true test for the Lady Mustangs as neither of those teams are easy targets.  Come out and support the Lady Mustangs as they set the softball world on fire.
