The Lady Mustangs competed in the CWVAC Championship at Ravenswood Middle School on Saturday. All season long, the Lady Mustangs have been the team that has loudly and methodically taken apart most teams that have opposed them while often making other teams look like elephants using toenail clippers. They did it with kills, some of which had enough zip to trim the hair on Big Foot. They also did it with finesse on the net and by never letting a ball touch the ground without hitting the floor digging for it. Serving the ball looked more like bullets finding dead center, some of which were so fast there was no reaction time for the other team. It was the perfect season, seemingly, as they went 12-6 in regular season play. It was like watching a clock work with each girl playing their part at a hundred percent.
Coach Abbie Boggs and assistant Anissa Collins both did an outstanding job and should be commended for getting these ladies prepared, physically and mentally, to excel in this 2025 season. The Lady Mustangs were in a rebuild year and faced some tough teams in the regular season, yet once again dominated at the championship tournament. The championship was separated into pools. The Lady Mustangs faced Spencer in the first set and took on Wahama in the second game. This was supposed to be a tough game, but the Lady Mustangs made it look like a cardboard box in a tornado and went through them like a knife in butter to move on to the next game with Summersville.
If you like fully intense volleyball, these two teams brought the smoke and then the fire. It took three games to decide which team would face South Harrison in the finals. The lead went back and forth in the first game as fingernails were shredded. The Lady Bears took the first game, but the Lady Mustangs came back in the second game and by narrow margins won as the Lady Bears had to drag their chins off the courts. In the third game, it was as intense as a war zone; the game was supposed to end at 15 points, but a team had to win by two. It was all out pandemonium on the courts as the Lady Mustangs won the game to move into the finals. That game was one of those physical as well as mental games that just drug the get up and go plumb out of a player.
With little rest, the Lady Mustangs faced off against South Harrison. It was going to be a barn burner. However, the Lady Mustangs looked as though the soup was drained from the bowl, and they just didn’t have anything left. Call it whatever you want, but with a little rest between games, this game would have been much different. They lost the match to the Lady Hawks, and their season was over but what a season it was. All season long, the Lady Mustangs have given the fans their money’s worth every time they hit the court and can hold their heads up as a result. If these girls can stay together as a team, they could take CCHS back to the state championships. Congratulations to the Lady Mustangs on a great season. Receiving All-Conference awards for outstanding play was Addison Jones and Nevaeh Duffield. The All-Tournament awards went to Layla Stewart and Maddy Holcomb.
