The CCMS Lady Mustangs hosted the Lady Bears of Nicholas County this past week on the volleyball court. The last time these two teams met, the Lady Bears took the Lady Mustangs to the woodshed. That was too much for the Lady Mustangs to digest, and they went on the offensive to get prepared for this next meeting. The Lady Bears are one of the premier teams in the league and a massive stepping stone to the main event… the CWVAC championship.
The Lady Mustangs would have to play flawless volleyball to beat them. It proved to be a break out the tissue box for the Lady Bears at this match up. Varsity hit the floor running, and while the Lady Bears are a good team that rarely makes mistakes, the Lady Mustangs were well prepared and had the Bear traps set ready to spring. The Lady Mustangs made very few mistakes which, in a volleyball game, usually determines the fate of a team.
The Lady Bears came out swinging in the first game but knew right away that the Lady Mustangs were out to cut some claws. It was a tight game and one that would take fingernails to the knuckle. Both teams came out firing, and the lead went either way.
The Lady Mustangs put an end to the game with a nail biter as they stood there with their smoking gun beating the Lady Bears in the first game 25-23. Once the Lady Bears pulled their chins off the floor, it was down to business in the second game. It was yet another nail biter as both teams were relentless in their pursuit of a win.
In the end, however, the Lady Bears beat the Lady Mustangs 24-26. A third game had to be played to break the tie, and it was a doozie. Two titans of volleyball faced off in a final matchup that would determine who was at the head of the lunch line. The game started, and it was a fight to the finish as both teams brought out the pitchforks. The Lady Mustangs got down to the business of mistake free volleyball and started kicking sand in faces. When the decibels died down in the gym, it was the Lady Mustangs giving the Lady Bears a literal thumpin’ as they used to say.
It was a big win for the girls that further proves that they can beat anybody, and the sweet smell of the championship is in their grasp. All the Lady Mustangs looked as though their skills were oiled and greased up for the rest of the season and hopefully a chance to bring home the gold at the CWVAC tournament. Tentatively, the CWVAC Championship will be on Saturday, October 25 possibly at South Harrison, but we will know more this week. GO Lady Mustangs!
