Tyler West and Doug Bowley teamed up to shoot a score of 59 in the Two Man Scamble on Sandy Brae’s par 71 golf course and claimed the number one spot in the 5th Annual Golden Delicious Golf Tournament. The tournament hosted 91 golfers making it the largest turn out to date for this charitable event. Proceeds from the golf tournament go to help support Clay County High School’s Golf Team. The August 29th tournament marked the last event to be held at the Sandy Brae course before its closing at the end of the month.
According to tournament directors, Larry Gillespie, Greg Gency and Johnny Coulter, this would not have been possible without the support of the forty different sponsors who contributed prizes and provided advertising for the event. They offered a big thank you to the sponsors for helping to promote enthusiasm for the sport of golf and for their support of Clay County High School’s golf program. The tournament directors plan to continue the tournament next year despite the closing of the Sandy Brae course. “We are continuing to seek other venues to host our yearly tournament and accommodate the growing number of participants” according to the tournament directors.
All in all it was a great tournament and the plans are already in the works for next year. To quote Arnold Palmer, “Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated. It satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening – it is without a doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented.”
