With summer on the downhill slide, katydids sounding off in the night, and a slight chill in the air hitting our bones on occasion, it can only mean one thing – fall sports are up and running. Yes, break out the long sleeve shirts and your old busted football helmet, it’s time to start cheering on fall sports.
For the first time in forever the CCMS Mustangs have mustered up a cross country team under newly appointed coach Geoff Hamrick and assistant coach Kim Carroll. Both are avid runners and are excited at the prospects of guiding the new team. They have already established some good runners, and it will ultimately help the CCHS Cross Country franchise in the future. The CCHS team, under the guidance of coach Ron Starcher, will be strong this year with returning runners from last season. There will also be a cross country meet here at home, the Buffalo Creek Invitational, which will go down as one of the toughest cross country meets in the state. The teams have been running and getting ready so we look forward to a winning season. The CCPIF league has been hitting the fields getting set for their first action of the season, which will be on August 12, beginning at 10 a.m. in Doddridge County. They will have four home games this season so you will have plenty of chances to catch some action.
Both the CCMS and CCHS football programs are also gearing up for their first scrimmages. This year promises to be a continuation of last year’s finish for CCHS with a tough win over Webster County. The boys seem to have a great attitude coming into the year. Many have hit the weights in the off season and individually trained to make sure they are ready for what is to be expected of them. CCHS Volleyball lost a couple of big guns in Sarah Boggs and Lexi Woodyard, and it will be interesting to see how they make changes in the team to compensate for those spots. The CCMS Volleyball team is coming off a championship season and will have to stay on top of their game. They will have a target on their back and will be the ones to beat. This will be a good season, I believe, for all the teams. They are working hard and have conditioned through the summer perfecting their skills. So, get out and support the teams. The first four games of the schedule are given this week, and make sure you pick up a full schedule of games at your local school.
