The Panther basketball team’s parachute didn’t open in the Sectional game against Braxton County. They came out looking like they would make this matchup with the Eagles a triumphant one; however, the wheels started falling off in the first period on defense.
The Eagles racked up 21 points in the first and didn’t look back. The Panthers usual scoring offense just couldn’t get the job done in this game. In the end, it was the Eagles over the Panthers by the score of Panthers 53, Eagles 78.
Thomas Haverty led the Panthers in scoring with 15, while the usual high scoring Isaac Workman, who was double and triple teamed, was able to hit for 12. The Panthers had a good season with 13 wins and nine losses and will be back next season to do it again. With this loss, indoor sports comes to a close for CCHS and CCMS.
We will remember the stellar year for the Mustang wrestling team as they had one of their best years ever in taking the CWVAC title. The CCHS wrestling team sent two to the state finals. The Lady Mustang basketball team had a rough year finishing 6-8. The Mustangs finished 10-6, placing fourth in the CWVAC conference tournament. Lady Panther basketball had a disappointing season with the Lady Panthers finishing 11 wins and 12 losses.
With basketball and wrestling being over, it can only mean one thing – outdoor sports, spring, warm weather, gardens, fishing, racing, and white water rafting. The shoals in the mighty Elk River will turn to small jaw heaven and bend the poles of the fisherman who will line the banks. Baseball and softball are gearing up as well. Panther and Mustang baseball teams and Lady Panther and Lady Mustang fast pitch softball teams are oiling up the mitts and rotator cuffs in preparation for their fun in the sun.
Little League will also begin toward the end of the month with future big leaguers showing what they are made of. All of the schedules will be posted online and made available so that you will know when and where to go. Clay County will indeed be the place for spring and summer action, and there will be lots to do to get us out of those winter time blues. Not only can you take advantage of the school sports, but there is opportunity for hiking, kayaking, fishing, and biking. So, shake the spiders out of those lawn chairs, put batteries in the boom box, and clean the mold out of the coolers – you don’t want to miss all the opportunities this county has to offer. No excuses, the great outdoors of Clay County are heating up.
