The CCHS track team is in the news again and is making waves in the track world. They competed this past Monday in the LKC Invitational held in Roane County.
It was tough competition for the team, but they stood out against some serious contestants. Seven teams took to the field, and both the boys’ and the girls’ teams were burning up the track. The rain tried to hamper the event, but as long as there is no lightning hitting the ground, the starting guns will fire the start of the race.
The ladies held their own, and Sharina Ratliff is becoming the queen of the track in the distance runs. She placed first in the 800 meter, the 1600 meter and the 3200 meter runs and was part of the first place 4×800 relay team. Madelyn Kilpatrick placed first in the 400 meter dash. Peyton Loving placed third in the 100 meter hurdles. Lexi Ramsey was third in the 300 meter hurdles. The 4×200 team placed second, while the 4×400 and the 4×800 teams placed first overall. Jessica Morris placed third in the high jump, and Katie Payne took fourth in the shot put.
For the boys team, Earl Jarrett took second in the 100 meter dash and Nate Canfield was second in the 200 meter dash along with second in the 400 meter dash. David Tanner was second in the 800 meter run and fourth in the 1600 meter run. Garrett Quinn was a beast on the hurdles, taking third in the 110 meter hurdles and second in the 300 meter hurdles. The relay teams owned the track, taking first in the 4×200, the 4×400, and the 4×800.
For the first time in a long time, the boys and the girls are clearing the high bar. Ethan Meadows and Jaquel Coleman are hitting the jump over five feet. When the match was over, the the boys’ and girls’ teams placed second overall with just a few points keeping them out of first place. Later in the week, they then hit the Hoover Challenge at Laidley Field and placed 7th overall as a team with 15 girls’ teams and 17 boys teams’ competing. The Panther teams will be back on the track next Saturday at the Chup Robinson Classic in Glenville. Come out and see history in the making for Clay County High School track team.
