The Cross Country team will return this year in the fall lineup of CCHS sports. Coach Starcher said that this will be an exciting year for the team, with 19 runners returning from last season. They have also added new runners to add some backbone to the already strong team. They will have a new look with some much needed uniforms, thanks to the donations, fundraising and some help from the athletic boosters.
There will be 12 runners on the boys’ squad and 15 on the girls’ squad. Trevor Armes, who achieved state champion status during the track season last year, returns to the team ranked 43rd in a list of hundreds throughout the state. Alexis Blake, ranked 137th, is the first girl ranked from Clay. The girls’ and the boys’ squads should, with no injuries, be a force in the world of cross country this year.
The team will be in a new region this season and early predictions indicate that CCHS cross country will have some tough competition, but will be the ones to beat at the meets. Their season begins Tuesday at the Beckley Invitational, and continues on Saturday at the Charles Point Indian Run Invitational. Their tournaments will be each Tuesday and Saturday of the week, check wvssac.org for the schedule, or it will be listed here each week. Come out and support the team, it looks like CCHS Cross Country will be tough to beat.
