Monday’s board of education meeting started with an executive session. After the executive session was finished, the board members proceded with the public portion of the meeting with the action items.
The resignation of Toni Holcomb as fourth grade teacher at Clay Elementary School, effective October 28, 2016, was approved. The resignation of Melanie Moore as custodian at CCHS, effective immediately, was approved. The resignation of Mike Barss as handyman for Clay County Schools, effective immediately, was approved. The resignation of Tammy Bailey as STARS teacher at Clay Elementary, effective October 14, 2016, was approved. The employment of Carlet Blake as a resource teacher at Lizemores Elementary, pending certification, was approved. The employment of TJ Legg as head wrestling coach at Clay Middle, pending certification was approved. The employment of Geoff Hamrick as head wrestling coach at CCHS was approved. The employment of Gavin Nichols as assistant girls basketball coach at Clay Middle, pending certification, was approved. The employment of after-school teachers for October 25, 2016, until Spring Break was approved, listed as follows: Big Otter Elementary, Pat Underwood and Sheran Helmick; Clay Elementary, JB Butcher, Kathi Linkinoggor, Addie Cole and Alice Nottingham; H.E. White Elementary, Tina Hall and Dustin Vaughan; Lizemores Elementary, Amy Nichols and Rebekah Holcomb; Clay Middle School, Eric Legg, Frankie Kerr, Michelle Hamrick (substitute); Clay High, Luella Dancy, Tasha Pennington and Lisa Arnold (substitute).
The transfer of Barbara Dorsey from teacher at Lizemores Elementary to first grade teacher at Big Otter Elementary was approved. The classroom teacher reassignment of Chastity Perdue from kindergarten teacher to second grade teacher at Clay Elementary was approved. The transfer of Rene Moore from bus no. 82 to bus no. 65 was approved. The transfer of James Edwards from bust no. 56 to bus no. 82 was approved.
The excess levy election date was approved to be set for January 28, 2017. The purchase of playground equipment and installation at H.E. White Elementary school was approved. The purchase of a septic system and installation at H.E. White Elementary school was approved. The purchase of a maintenance truck for the transportation department was approved. The Clay Middle School band requested $2,934for the purchases of three ne w instruments, and it was approved. The termination of Beverly Clevenger and James Sams as substitute bus operators due to unavailability to sub was tabled.
The board appointed an interim superintendent of schools, for a term to begin January 1, 2017, and continue until June 30, 2017. As per WV Code, the board must appoint an interim superintendent if a vacancy arises between June 2 and Dec. 31. The board can then enter into a multi-year contract after Jan. 1 and prior to June 2 to begin July 1, 2017. The appointed Interim Superintendent is Joe Paxton.
An application has been submitted to the SBA (School Building Authority) for Clay Elementary. The roof is leaking and needs to be fixed.
